Oliver Twist

Libby and I saw Oliver Twist last night. It was fun. Cute kid, interesting story.

Watching movies made now that are adaptations of books written a hundred years ago or more, makes me want to read the book so that I can critique the director's intention.

The great achievement of this Dickens adaptation was that it was completely interesting, the whole way through. And that is why I have not read Oliver Twist (I think, I actually suspect I may have, but I don't remember). I may have this conceit in my mind regarding Dickens becuase the first novel of his I read was David Copperfield. That was soooo long, and it was sooooo slow. I finished it, though, and liked it in the end. That's how it often is with such slow novels.

Another attempt at this art (making slow Victorian novels palatable to modern fast-paced audiences) is Pride and Prejudice. Yet another version is coming out this fall (or Winter, I don't remember).

How low-brow of me to be bored by Austen and Dickens. Call me Mr. Neandrathal!
