Must Read Article

AL Daily today has an article posted that I think is of great importance. I do not think that it is perfect, it is wide ranging and broad in its focus, thus lacking a rigor of thought that will ultimately be necessary in a very critical discussion. However, it is important because I think its overview is largely accurate, and not just for Europe, but for Western Civilization as a whole.

It is, shortly, about the "Cultural Wars" of Europe (a loaded term). It proposes that the war between traditional Western culture and the ascendant post-Christian relatavistic hegemony (the article gives a good idea of how intolerant the latter is), is of the utmost importance in the second war: that of the arriving Islamic immigrants in Europe and their assertion of their culture, which is of course non-Christian and absolutists not only in morality but in government, etc. Ultimately, I think this importance is completely obvious, but it's got to be said, anyway.

The article is in Commentary, and it is by George Weigel. It is called: "Europe's Two Culture Wars".

Not a bad article. I had stopped reading AL Daily because most of the articles' seemed like they were just reinstating modern liberal atheistic thought, and they didn't have an rss feed. I guess I'll start back up again.

Another site you might be interested, although it is more on the tech, economic, political side than the cultural side is tcsdaily.com. With the similarity in name it might be by the same people.

heya, i thought it was a good article as well. like you said, a bit broad and generalized, but certainly hits many nails on the head as far as the current and pending issues in Europe (and future America). Very discouraging actually, as I don't see any cure to it. In my perspective, the spread of Islam really is an unstoppable force, but we've lived through difficult times in the past, and we will in the future. God is the same.

I agree, Luke. Ultimately, all of the good things of Western culture being lost would be a tragedy, but not the end of the world. The Church will survive: if not in Europe and the USA, then in China, Africa and South America. And where the Church continues, God's light will not be absent.

After all, Rome fell, and the Church continued. Constantinople fell, and the Church continued. And, contrary to all the world's expectations, where the Church is there will be hope and dignity available to all humankind. Because Jesus loves her, this I know.
