La Grande Illusion (1937)
Director: Jean Renoir
The first prisoner of war camp escape movie ever made, and the best. This is a really fantastic movie. Its fully framed characters typify different types of people of the time, and their interactions open up windows into the things that divide and unite humanity in general.
It's not only profound: it's also witty, lively, and beautiful. This is a great movie.
