The Life of Emile Zola (1937)
Director: William Dieterle
This was the best picture winner in 1937. It's a bit stodgy. It's a lot like movies that win best picture now. It has a social conscience, it's reasonably entertaining, and technically OK. I don't want to criticize a movie that criticizes unreasonable racial and social prejudices, as this movie does, and it's not terrible. It's just not great.
